Description:

This sword was imported during the Civil War and represents an unusual combination of features and decoration. In overall configuration it very closely follows the 1845 pattern British Rifle Brigade sword, though the decoration was unmistakably intended for the American market. 37 5/8 inches overall, with a lightly curved 32 inch double fuller blade, with an etched and gold washed panel covering the lower third of both sides, featuring the script text "Union for ever(sic)" on the right side, "US" and an American Eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the left, with the Clauberg trademark on the left ricasso. Steel hilt, with a pierced-through American Eagle and "US" over a rifleman's horn between the guard branches, a smooth pommel, and a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. The brown lacquered iron scabbard is fitted with gilt brass furniture.

Rating Definition:

Fine with the exceptionally fine blade showing some mild spotting and handling marks, with 95% plus original gilt finish and strong etching. A mixed brown patina is present on the hilt, with a pair of rivets absent from the grip wings and mild handling marks. The scabbard is fine with much of the brown finish, a few dents, and some mild spotting.
