Description:

Maynard breech loading carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, c. 1863-1865. This Second Model ("Model 1863") carbine lacks the tape primer, tang sight and patch box found on First Model carbines. The carbine has a blued part octagon/part round barrel with folding, two leaf rear sight and iron, half-moon, front sight. The hammer, frame, lever and thin style buttplate are color casehardened. A sling bar and ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock is straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." in three lines. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "EDWARD MAYNARD./PATENTEE./MAY 27. 1851./DEC. 6. 1859." in three lines. The serial number, "14301" is stamped on the lower receiver tang. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark "G.W.S." is stamped on the left side of the barrel. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the script initials "GWS" enclosed in a rectangle and "JM" enclosed in rectangle with rounded ends. The Maynard was considered to be a reliable weapon, and the Ordnance Department purchased 20,202 Maynard carbines during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The carbine is all original, appears to be un-issued with only very minimal storage wear. The barrel retains 90% plus of the original military blue finish. The blue has developed a dark patina but has very little wear. The sub-inspection markings on the left side of the barrel are crisp. The receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have 85% of the muted case colors. The case colors show minimal handling wear. There is no flash pitting on the percussion nipple or adjacent portions of the receiver. The receiver markings are crisp. The sling bar has a number of minor handling marks. The oil finished walnut stock is in excellent condition with a few very minor storage marks. The Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks on the left side of the stock wrist are excellent. This is an attractive example of an important Civil War breech-loading carbine in un-issued condition.
