Robert Johnson U.S. Contract Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol

This U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, in 1841. The pistol has blade front and dished rear sights, a swivel mounted ramrod, standard inspection marks on the barrel, standard maker's marks over "1841" on the lock, and "JH" and "WAT" cartouches on the left flat. This model was the final flintlock martial pistol used in the U.S. and is certainly among the most attractive single shot military pistols ever made.

ConditionFine. The bright iron components primarily have only light patination, some small specks of oxidation, handling and storage marks, and some slight verdigris near the golden rod toned brass flash pan. The lock retains more than half of the original subdued case colors, and 40% of the original blue finish remains on the trigger and spring faded slightly to a plum brown tone. The stock has a small chip forming at the rear of the right flat, a chip on the rear of the left flat, surprisingly clean edges and deep cartouches, and some scattered light dings and scratches from handling and storage. It is mechanically excellent and has distinct markings. Many of these pistols have been converted to percussion, seen hard use, been damaged, or have long since been destroyed.
