Description:

The general characteristics suggest the gun was built near or west of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It has been attributed as the work of Henry Gibbs of Lancaster, but no signature or other identifying markings are available to confirm this. These smoothbore guns were utilitarian pieces that were more versatile and faster to reload than rifles. The barrel is octagonal in the breech section and is fitted with low profile blade and notch sights like many Kentucky rifles. Interestingly, the gun has a double set triggers much more commonly found on rifles. The curly maple stock has brass fittings, including an attractive patch box with heart pierced "Q" finial, light engraving, and spaced side plates; Rococo style scroll carving in raised relief, a Pennsylvania Dutch folk style crescent moon inlay on the cheekpiece, and scroll inlays ahead of the stock flats.

Rating Definition:

Fair as poorly reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel was shortened from the breech end and has artificial brown applied to the refiled tang. The lock was replaced with a refinished example by Ketland & Co. The forend is entirely replaced starting at the front of the ramrod entry pipe. The restored stock has also been repaired at the wrist and has many small pieces spliced, including around and in the lock inlet. The carving and tear drop flats are evident but partially smoothed. Attractive flame figure remains visible. The iron surfaces have dark brown tones, minor pitting and oxidation, and marks and scratches, including some tool marks. The brass has aged patina. The lock needs work and will currently not lock up properly.
