Flintlock American Long Rifle

This relatively plain rifle incorporates a sliding wood patch box and brass buttplate, elements sometimes absent from "poor boy" rifles, and would have been the type likely most widely owned by farmers and other laborers in the early 19th century. The only marking found on this rifle is an "H-V-F" stamp on the underside of the lock. A Kentucky style flintlock pistol with the same mark on its very similar, if not matching, lock was identified as "probably pre-Revolutionary War" in "Guns of the Old West" by Chapel. Locks of this design were likely purchased from a hardware merchant after being made in a city or imported from Europe. There are similar rifles by makers from Lancaster County and Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the years immediately following the War of 1812. It has a set of very low blade front and notch rear sights. A forged iron cleaning worm is inside the patch box.

ConditionFair. The barrel is mostly an even brown with some heavy flash pitting at the breech and minor oxidation and marks throughout. The lock has a matching dark brown with mild pitting and oxidation. The stock shows signs of having been cleaned up and has some textured insect type damage, small dings and scrapes, minor hairline cracks, an slightly wider crack at the left flat, and chipping near the muzzle. The lock functions fine and has a clear stamp. Some screws and small parts are replacements.
