Two British Bolt Action Rifles

A) Birmingham Small Arms No. 1 MK III Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle in Target Configuration

Dated 1908 on the butt socket, this rifle shows many of the typical features and markings of the pre-World War I Mark III rifle, with a blade front sight set between a pair of protective wings and a tangent rear sight with a fine elevation adjustment drum and a windage knob, along with a Birmingham Small Arms/Parker marked adjustable peep sight on the left side of the frame, with patent dates ranging from 1907 to 1910. The top of the chamber has been polished flat, with the markings "E.C.B. STRANGE" and "PERMIT" added, with "S/crown/PERMIT" on the top of the front receiver ring, with the Strange marking repeated on a brass disc on the right side of the buttstock; Strange has not yet been identified. The socket bears the mark of King Edward VII over "B.S.A.Co/1908/ShtL.E./III". Fitted with a smooth military style stock, with the volley front sight on the left side of the forearm (volley rear sight deleted to make room for the target sight), a raised Broad Arrow stamp on the right side of the buttstock surrounded with "BS Aco/BIRMINGHAM/III", and a brass buttplate.

ConditionVery good with 80% of the arsenal refurbished blue finish showing some bright edge wear, a few scratches on the magazine, and mild handling marks overall. A retention screw is absent from the peep sight, and some of the other screws on the rifle have been turned. The stock is very good, with some mild chipping on the upper handguard and light dents and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
