Description:

This is an excellent example of a very desirable large ring variant flatside Model 1896 Broomhandle Mauser pistol with the original matching combination wooden shoulder stock/holster and has the very desirable Von-Lengerke import frame markings. These pistols were produced in the early 1900s, and this specific model is found in the serial number range in which the Mauser factory was changing from the early cone hammer pistols to the next production model termed the "large ring-flatside" models. This pistol is even more desirable in that it was imported and marked by the very famous New York import house of Von Lengerke and Detmold. During this time, these pistols were probably some of the best machined, hand polished and blued 1896 series pistols. The top of the barrel extension is marked with "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF/A/N", the left side has the serial number (27202), and the "Crown/U" proof, and the right side is marked with the early Mauser "Antler" firing proof. The underside of the barrel has several small letter proofs, and the left side milled panel is marked "VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW-YORK". This model has the correct large ring hammer, non-reinforced barrel/chamber area, long extractor, late style one-lug firing pin, and the flat non-milled fame panels. It is fitted with a set of walnut grips with 22 grooves on each side. It has the late style tangent rear sight graduated from 50-1,000 correctly numbered to the pistol and a fixed front sight. It is complete with the original lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip frame. This pistol is accompanied by the original walnut wooden shoulder stock/holster with the original matching attaching iron as well as the following later production accessories: two brown leather belt holsters with shoulder straps, an unmarked brown leather stock harness with cleaning rod, two boxes of 7.63mm ammunition, two loaded 10-round 7.63mm stripper clips, three empty clips, two loose cleaning rods and a canvas covered luggage-style case with leather corners, burgundy felt lining, and compartments for the pistol and stock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the original pre-war rust blued finish overall, wear on the edges and high spots, and thinning and minor blue loss on the rear grip strap, the front of the frame rails, and a couple of areas on the underside of the barrel. The various small parts retain 85% of the heat blued finish. The grips are in very fine condition with most of the original varnish and some very minor finish loss around the tops of the grips. The shoulder stock is in very fine condition overall with minor handling marks, scratches and light dings. The metal hinge portion retains 75% of its original blue finish while the attaching iron retains 85% of its original blue finish which has darkened/browned out overall. The leather gear is all supple with minor handling marks, and the case is in very good condition. As noted, the pistol has matching numbers to include the original shoulder stock. A very nice example of an early pre-war large ring-flatside Mauser pistol rig.
