Description:

This is an excellent example of a late WWII production U.S. Colt Model 1903 General Officer's pistol rig produced in 1944 that comes with complete the original US Army letter dated Jan 1967 issuing this pistol to BG Harold H. Dunwoody. He was born in Paris, France, to the late Brigadier General Halsey Dunwoody. BG Harold Dunwoody graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1943. General Dunwoody served a long and very distinguished 31 year military career in the U.S. Army. He served in three different wars; WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Consequently he was able to wear the "Combat Infantry Badge with two Stars". Additionally, he was awarded several battle and meritorious service awards to include the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star, both during Korea, as the Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division where he was directly involved in combat actions in the vicinity of Chupari, Korea. He was directly involved in capturing Hills 820 and 851 against Communist China/Korea. He also twice received the Army Distinguished Service Medal (both during Vietnam), twice received the Legion of Merit (also during Vietnam), and was twice awarded the Purple Heart. Although a WWII era Colt manufactured pistol, these were the standard U.S. General Officer's pistols issued from 1942 until 1975. They have always been highly desirable and highly collectable as a US martial pistol. This is even more collectable as the General Officer that received this pistol has a exemplary military career. In fact, during the research of his career, it was noted that in several instances that there has been a member of the "Dunwoody" family in every military campaign since the Revolutionary War. Additionally, BG Harold Dunwoody's daughter, Ann E. Dunwoody was the first female to achieve the rank of Four-Star General of the Army. The pistol itself has the standard Colt two-line address and patent dates on the left side of the slide and the caliber marking and "U.S. PROPERTY" roll-stamped on the right side of the frame. The left side of the trigger guard is marked with the Colt "VP" verified proof, and "7" is on the right side. It is fitted with checkered grips with Colt silver medallions on each side and comes with one all-blued Colt magazine marked on the base: "COLT 32 AUTO". It also comes with his original black leather General Officer holster, belt and double magazine pouch rig. It also comes with his full compliment of his meritorious service awards, General Stars, CIB, unit citation and overseas ribbons.

Rating Definition:

Very fine condition with 95% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish with light wear on the edges and high spots overall. The grips are in very good condition showing discernable checking on both sides mixed with light handling marks and pressure dents from actual use during his career. The GO holster, belt and magazine pouch rig are all in excellent condition showing 98% of their black color overall with only minor handling marks along the edges. This is a very nice, historic General Officer's pistol and holster/belt rig.
