Description:

This is an example of a Chilean contract Model 1941 Johnson semi-automatic rifle that was manufactured circa 1943/44. It was estimated that approximately 10,000 were produced for Chile with several hundred being imported by Navy Arms in the late 1970s/80s. This appears to be one of the early Navy Arms imports as it does not appear to be any Navy Arms import marks on the rifle. Additionally, it retains the original unaltered "30-06" markings on top of the receiver, however, it has been fitted with a correct 7mm marked barrel. It has been refurbished, probably by Navy Arms, and has a very nice green/gray parkerized finish on all the metal parts. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USMC acquired many of these Model 1941 rifles from the Netherlands Purchasing Commission and later used them in the early days of the war before being replaced by the Army adopted M1 Garand rifle. The Chilean contract rifles were manufactured some time after that when Johnson was looking for other worldwide contracts. The rifles are unique in that they have the following: 1) an easily removable barrel which was useful for Marine paratroopers and Marine Raiders. 2) They had a 10 shot rotary magazine which could be quickly loaded with the five round stripper clips or single rounds in between battles to top off the magazine, (unlike the M1 where you had to eject the entire clip) and reload a new clip. The top of the receiver is marked with the four line Johnson Automatics model markings, caliber and company address over the serial number "4536". The rear of the barrel/chamber area has the correct Mauser contract type barrel step and is correctly stamped and "7mm" small Chilean proofmarks. The barrel collar (only) is marked "30-06/41" on the front of the barrel support. The bolt is stamped with the number "6805" and has the larger bolt face for the 7x57mm cartridge. The right side of the rear sight is stamped "METERS", and "M2" is stamped on the left side. It is fitted with a two-piece smooth walnut stock with a checkered steel buttplate and a brown leather claw type sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 98% of the green/gray parkerized finish. The bolt still remains in the white from the factory. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with a nice medium/dark oil finish overall and handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides from use. A nice looking Johnson rifle in a scarce caliber.
