Description:

Henry Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa September 1864. The rifle is engraved with the typical flowing scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the side-plates, forward portions of the receiver, top of the receiver, upper and lower tang and heel of the buttplate. The sides of the receiver are engraved with line and scallop borders. The left side plate is engraved with a finely detailed dog on point surrounded by scrollwork. The engraving is typical of the style utilized by Samuel J. Hoggson on factory engraved Henry rifles. The rifle has a blued barrel and integral magazine, silver-plated brass receiver and buttplate and casehardened hammer, trigger and lever. The stock is straight grain American walnut with a polished oil finish. The rifle has mid -late production features which include the second style receiver without the alternative rear sight dovetail, large diameter brass cartridge follower head and beveled follower slot in the receiver, buttplate with pointed heel and folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevator bar slide stop screw. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the larger, second style New Haven Arms legend which utilizes all serif letters. The left side of the barrel and stock are fitted with a screw-fastened sling loop and sling swivel which were standard features on later production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged trap. The serial number, "6345" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left receiver tang beneath the stock, in the upper stock receiver tang recess and on the inside of the buttplate. The assembly number "452" is stamped on the barrel under the loading sleeve and on the loading sleeve. All of the serial numbers and assembly numbers match. The late style buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. The rifle is accompanied by a copy of a letter from author and Winchester rifle expert George Madis that states he examined this rifle "both inside and outside" and determined that is was original and in excellent condition. We do not agree with his assessment.

Rating Definition:

Very good as professionally restored. The protected areas on sides of the barrel and magazine retain 60% of the blue finish. There is finish loss and shallow pitting along the bottom of the magazine and on the edges of the barrel flats. The legend and serial number are clear. Both the front and rear sights are replacements. Traces of the original silver plated finish are visible in protected areas on the bottom of the receiver. The balance of the brass receiver and buttplate have an old and very attractive aged patina. The side-plate joints are tight and generally free from pry-marks. The engraving is sharp with minimal handling wear. The case colors on the hammer, lever and trigger have faded to a dark patina. The stock has been lightly sanded and refinished many years ago but remains in very good overall condition.
