The Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle was introduced in order to take advantage of the more powerful centerfire cartridges of the time. This one is in "40-65 W.C.F." and features the desirable casehardened frame. The included factory letter confirms the caliber, round barrel, plain trigger and special order half magazine. The rifle was received in the warehouse on September 10, 1888, and shipped on the same day, order number 12167. Blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights on a round barrel marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-65 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number behind the lever. The frame, hammer, lever, buttplate and forend cap are casehardened, and the remaining metal surfaces are blue. Mounted with a nicely figured smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Very fine. The barrel retains 75% original blue finish. The hammer, forend cap, lever and frame retain 70% original case colors with the most vivid case colors remaining on the frame. The buttplate has a mottled gray patina. The wood is very fine with a spot of dark residue visible near the lower tang and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
