Description:

This is an attractive example of a seldom encountered Factory Engraved Colt Model 1860 Army revolver manufactured in 1867. The rear sides of the barrel and frame are engraved with a floral scroll design, the top and heel of the back strap and the trigger guard also have a floral scroll design. The hammer has a wolf's head motif. The top of the barrel is marked "--ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U. S. AMERICA --" . And the left side of the frame is marked " COLT'S/PATENT" and the left trigger guard shoulder is marked "44 CAL". The replacement rebated cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene as well as the partial serial number "0151". The complete matching serial number "167678" is marked on the barrel, frame and trigger guard and the partial matching serial number "7678" is marked on the wedge and cylinder pin. The back strap is un-numbered and there is a hole for a lanyard. There is the letter "E" above the barrel serial number and below the frame and trigger guard number indicating this revolver was to be engraved at the factory. Standard German silver blade front and hammer notch rear sights. The revolver is fitted with a one piece grip with a relief carved Mexican Eagle on the left side. The revolver comes in a wooden case with an inset brass shield on the lid, a "Directions For Loading Colt's Pistols" label affixed to the inside of the lid and wine colored velvet lining. In the case is a flask with a stand of arms motif, a Colt and "A.H.K." marked iron two cavity bullet mold, a combination nipple wrench/screwdriver tool, an unopened box of 6 combustible envelope cartridges, two empty small U.M.C. cap tins, approximately 12 lead balls and a key.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark mottled patina, (lighter on the replacement cylinder) with some minor dings on the right side of the barrel around the wedge. There are strong traces of original silver plating in protected areas of the trigger guard, while the brass has an aged patina. The grip is slightly undersized and shows a dark patina and numerous minor age cracks, and the left panel has been repaired at the frame junction. The cylinder scene is faint, but visible. The markings and engraving are clear. The action is excellent. The custom made case is good with some minor cracks, dings and scratches on the exterior and some minor wear on the lining. The reproduction flask has a dent in the center on each side, otherwise very good, the cartridge container is very good plus, the bullet mold is good with some minor overall oxidation and pitting on the sprue cutter and the cap tins and tool are very good.
