Description:

Manufactured in 1853. This is a nice example of a factory engraved and inscribed Civilian Third Model Dragoon. The revolver featured early donut floral scroll engraving on the loading lever sides, frame, hammer sides and back strap. In addition, there is a wolves' head on the hammer sides. There is a scalloped band around the barrel muzzle. The top barrel flat is marked with the one line address "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY" with a scallop border, and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT" in a banner. There is a shield on the trigger guard amid the scroll engraving. The back strap is inscribed "Lieu Manton". Multiple men of that rank and surname served in the Union Army. One Lieutenant Manton was promoted to first lieutenant on July 2, 1863, was wounded at Gettysburg, and died on January 23, 1864. Lieutenant James C. Manton of Company B in the Second Pennsylvania Reserves died in September 1862 during a march presumably from disease. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, cylinder (renumbered) and back strap. The partial serial number "091" is marked on the wedge and cylinder pin, and the loading lever has the partial number "3091". The cylinder is roll engraved with the Indian battle scene. The "COLTS PATENT" marking is visible on the cylinder. This revolver has the round brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops found on Third Model Dragoons. The left trigger guard shoulder is marked with a small "J". The revolver has the standard brass blade front and hammer notch rear sights, blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, silver plated trigger guard and back strap, and a smooth one-piece walnut grip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restored some time ago. The metal surfaces have a smooth artificial brown and gray patina. There is a small amount of very minor pitting on the cylinder in the area of the serial number as well as signs of cleaning in the same area. There are strong amounts of age darkened silver in protected areas of the trigger guard. Otherwise, the brass has a natural aged patina. The grip is also very good with most of the varnish remaining and a few minor dings and handling marks. Part of the cylinder marking, "MODEL U.S.M.R.", is not visible, and the number is restamped to match revolver. The cylinder scene is 90% visible and clear. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
