Description:

Manufactured in prior to 1898 and shipped in 1900. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which describes it as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 25/35, Barrel Type:1/2 Octagon, Barrel Length: 22 inches, Trigger: Plain, Checkered stock:, Pistol grip, Sights: Lyman front, 1/2 magazine, Takedown" and "Swiss buttplate." The letter states that this rifle was initially shipped from Winchester on May 4, 1900, and was returned for repair in 1908 and 1909. The rifle has a blued barrel, half-magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt and a fire blue loading gate. The hammer, lever, and trigger are color casehardened. The Swiss buttplate is nickel plated. The forearm and pistol grip stock are "X" or "XX" fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The 22-inch part round/part octagon barrel has a Lyman "Jack" front sight with white bead and a rare special order "Winchester Express" rear sight with one fixed leaf and two folding leaves marked "50", "1," and "2". A Lyman folding combination rear sight with peep is mounted on the receiver tang. The sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" just ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "25-35 W.C.F." is stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the takedown collar. The serial number "85719", is stamped across the bottom of the receiver. Winchester Model 1894 rifles are rarely found with 22 inch part round/part octagon barrels. Swiss buttplates are extremely rare on Model 1894 rifles. A takedown rifle with short part round/part octagon barrel, special front rear and tang sights, Swiss buttplate and fancy grade checkered pistol grip stock and forearm is a one-of-a-kind rifle.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel has 97% of the original blue finish with a tiny spot of pitting on the top about three inches behind the rear sight and some very light edge wear. The barrel markings are sharp. The right side of the half-magazine has some light takedown scuff marks. The finish on the lower half of the takedown collar and adjacent portions of the receiver is thin and has faded to a blue-gray patina. The balance of the receiver has 85% plus of the blue finish and shows only very light handling marks. Nearly all the blue remains on the bolt. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the loading gate. The hammer, trigger, and lever retain most of the muted case colors. The Swiss buttplate retains about 95% of the nickel plated finish with some minor flaking around the edges. The refinished fancy grade walnut stock and forearm have a low-luster oil finish and are in very fine overall condition with a few scattered and very minor handling marks. The checkered panels on the forearm and pistol grip have some light handling wear but remain in very good condition. This is a unique, fully documented, special order Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle with very rare short part round/part octagon barrel and Swiss buttplate. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
