This is a solid example of an early production Burgess slide action shotgun with the Damascus twist pattern barrel. The Burgess gun company was established in 1892 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well know arms producers. These shotgun were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Firearms Company. With a single nickel bead sight 2 5/8 inch chamber choked improved cylinder. Features a hand cut serial number in a script pattern, a full length Damascus twist steel barrel that is marked with the three-line, patent dates of the Burgess company with the top of the breech block cover marked "BURGESS GUN CO./ BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A.". It is fitted with a walnut stock, a gutta-percha pistol grip that also functions as part of the slide action mechanism and a hard rubber buttplate on the end, marked "BURGESS GUN CO" in a circle around a dog and pheasant. It has a deluxe checkered forearm with a metal end cap. Length of pull is 14 inches.

Good. Displaying areas of edge wear, light spotting, smooth brown patina and some pitting that has been cleaned and finished over. The wood is very good, with scattered scratches and small dents throughout, as well as some smoothed checkering. Mechanically fine.
