A) Ottoman Horse Pistol

Manufacturer: Arab
Model: Flintlock
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 62
Barrel: 13 1/2 inch part round
Finish: bright/silver
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 2221
Item Interest: Average
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 119
Class: Antique
Description:

Both of these pistols display extensive ornamentation in higher quality than is often found on Middle Eastern flintlock pistols. They have relief floral and dot patterns on their muzzle bands, false ramrods as is common on Ottoman pistols, silver inlaid martial motifs on the barrels including what appears to be Arabic calligraphy, scroll and martial themed raised relief carving on the stock, engraving on the furniture, silver inlay on the locks, silver wire designs on the wrists, and silver pommel caps. There are no identifying markings, but the pistols were likely originally built in Continental Europe and then altered to fit the owner's tastes in the Ottoman Empire. This high level of decoration would have helped portray their owner as an influential figure.

Rating Definition:

Very good with aged silver-gray patina on the iron, even aged patina on the silver, patches of oxidation and pitting, mostly crisp carving and engraving, some slight chips and dents on the otherwise fine stock, and slight gaps in the inlets. The lock has a stiff mainspring but functions fine.
