This carbine is one of 23,000 estimated to have been manufactured in 1865 and 1866. Around half of these carbines were equipped with the Stabler cut-off device like this example. It has the standard manufacturer markings and features including government inspection markings. Many of these later Spencers were used during the post-Civil War Indian Wars on the Great Plains and in the Southwest. Documents concerning a prior sale of the carbine and copies of information about this model are included.
Very good with strong original blue in the protected area concealed by the forearm, trace of original blue finish elsewhere, and otherwise dark brown patina and light spotting on the barrel. The other components have patches original case colors, especially on and near the hammer, and mottled gray patina on the balance. The wood is also fine and has some dings, minor chips, and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
