Rare Documented Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is a First Model manufactured with a special order part octagon barrel. The two-line address/King's improvement patent dates are marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight. Blade front sight. The rear sight has been removed and a filled block put in the dovetail, and a folding leaf sight has been installed with a dovetail 7/8 of an inch from the breech. There is also a short range tang mounted peep sight. The serial is marked on the lower tang, and the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL." The left front of the lever is stamped ""W.H. CLEVELAND/NORWALK, O." A William Henry Cleveland (1836-1913) appears in period sources from Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio. It's unknown if it is the same subject or not. Blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate; and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a metal forend cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment containing a 4 piece cleaning rod. The underside of the stock directly behind the lower tang is stamped "1879" and behind that is small compass inset in the stock. The factory letter confirms the 26 inch half octagon barrel, plain trigger and checkered stock and it had a sporting leaf sight when it was shipped on August 8, 1878.

ConditionFine. The barrel retains 50% original blue finish, mainly in protected areas, with brown patina and some light spotting on the balance. The magazine tube has a brown patina with light spotting. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina, (a smooth dark patina on the buttplate). The wood is also fine with some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The action needs work; the cartridge elevator does not function, and the action does not fully cock the hammer. The markings are clear.
