Fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter

This fine Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has a 26 inch full octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with screw adjustable insert and serrated edges. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with varnish finish. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. -" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber; "38-56 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 serial numbers are roll-stamped behind the trigger and the serial number "29464" is stamped in script numerals ahead of the rear tang screw. The barrel, magazine and bolt have the Winchester commercial blue finish and the loading gate is niter blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The included factory letter confirms the caliber, octagon barrel and plain trigger. It was received in warehouse on May 21, 1889, and shipped on May 24, 1889.

ConditionFine. 85% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. There is some rust on the face of the muzzle and some finish loss and scattered spots of age discoloration on the barrel and magazine ahead of the magazine retaining band. The barrel markings are sharp. The bolt retains 95% of the blue finish. The niter blue loading gate has faded to a blue-gray patina. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever have close to 60% of the original color casehardened finish remaining. The case colors have faded slightly and the receiver has and lever show some high point wear with silvering on contact points. The buttplate, typically, has more finish wear than other components and retains about 60% of the original case colors with scattered patches of age discoloration. The stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition and retain about 80% of the original varnish with light handling wear. There are several shallow scratches on the stock wrist at the end of the upper tang and a few minor handling marks on the stock and forearm. This is a good looking example of an early production Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.
