Description:

As told by Winchester expert and author George Madis in his included handwritten letter concerning this highly unique carbine, this gun was manufactured at the Winchester factory from an assortment of rifle and carbine parts. The standard carbine receiver has a saddle ring stud with ring mounted on the left side. The carbine was built with an octagon barrel that has the dovetail for the forend tip of a rifle, a rifle style front sight and a carbine style ladder rear sight. The single barrel band has been specially fabricated at the factory for this carbine and is "unlike any seen" by Madis. The forearm is approximately 1 inch shorter than a forearm used on a standard carbine. The stock is a carbine style, including the buttplate. The barrel and receiver have the Winchester factory oval proof at the breech. The barrel has an additional Winchester mail order letter "P" in an oval proof. Madis notes that "other arms in various models assembled about this period also have the mail order proof." The underside of the barrel has the number "29," which indicates a 1929 assembly date. The serial number dates the receiver to 1927. It has been speculated that this carbine was part of a 100 gun order for a production by cowboy star Tim McCoy and 3 to 4 octagon barreled Model 92 carbines are known to exist.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 90% original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown and some loss on the buttplate. The receiver has a number of scratches and some mild pitting among the flaking. The wood is excellent with some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This rare octagon barreled carbine would make a fine addition to even the most advance Winchester collections.
