Exceptional Civil War Burnside Breechloading Carbine

These "Fifth Model" Burnside carbines represent the completion of the evolution of General Ambrose Burnside's ingenious carbine design. Unfortunately for Burnside, he profited little, if at all, from the his well-known design because he was forced to sell his shares before the company received sizeable government contracts. The outbreak of the Civil War led to the purchase of over 50,000 Burnside carbines. They were the third most widely purchased breech loading carbines during the war after only the Sharps and the Spencer. This high condition example has the Model of 1864 receiver marking, "STEEL 1864" barrel marking, Burnside Co. address lock plate marking, two leaf rear sight, breechblock numbered to gun and sling swivel attached to the underside of the stock. The stock has a crisp "RKW" cartouche on the wrist and "RKW" and "NSF" inspector marking on the forearm and comb respectively.

ConditionExcellent plus, as issued. The barrel retains 97% original blue finish with speckling of gray on the underside, and the breechblock, tangs and lever retain 85% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The remaining metal surfaces retain 99% original case colors. The wood also excellent with a narrow chip missing from the forearm (right side) and a long shallow pressure dent on the buttstock (right side). The cartouche is sharp. Mechanically excellent. A high condition U.S. carbine for the serious Civil War weapons collector.
