Outstanding Peabody Breach-Loading Carbine

Peabody Breech Loading Carbine manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island, between 1866 and 1871. The .50 caliber carbine has a military blue barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The walnut stock and forearm are oil finished. The barrel has a steel block front sight and folding leaf rear sight with one, three and six-hundred yard notches. A staple-mounted sling ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the legend "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." in five lines. The Peabody inspection mark for foreign contract arms which consists of the script letters "W.C." in a rectangle is stamped on the left stock wrist. Single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. Although developed and tested during the Civil War it was not manufactured in quantity until after the end of the conflict; most of the 112,000 Peabody carbines and rifles were purchased by foreign governments. Most of the .50 caliber Peabody carbines were purchased by France and a few were subsequently resold in the United States for issue to state militias. Examples of Peabody carbines in excellent, un-issued, condition are scarce.

ConditionExcellent plus. This carbine is all original, and retains at least 98% of the military blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel band, receiver, breech block, hammer, lever and buttplate have nearly all of the vivid case colors. The frame and buttplate screws have most of the fire blue finish. The receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition, and retain nearly all of the original oil finish with only light handling wear. The small inspection mark on the left side of the stock wrist is sharp. This is an outstanding example of a .50 caliber Peabody Carbine that would be difficult to improve upon.
