Description:

This is an outstanding example of a Colt Model 1855 revolving carbine with English proofs. R.L. Wilson estimates only 2,000 of these were purchased. This only 200 carbines were manufactured in this configuration. This rare carbine is marked with British "crown/GP" and "crown/V" proofs on the left rear barrel flat below the rear sight and alternating in each cylinder flute. The top strap is marked "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. USA", and one of the cylinder flutes is stamped "PATENTED SEPT. 10, 1850". The left side of the receiver has "COLT'S PATENT/NOV. 24th 1857" lightly stamped directly above and ahead of the saddle ring and stud. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, lower tang and the buttplate toe. The upper left rear of the trigger guard is marked with the small letter "P". It features a pinched brass front sight and rear sight with two folding leaves marked for 100, 300, and 600 yards. The barrel, cylinder and frame are blue while the loading lever and hammer are casehardened and the trigger guard and buttplate are bright brass. It is mounted with an straight grip walnut stock with crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 80% of the original blue finish and rich case colors with some thinning/fading. The brass components have an attractive aged patina. A brown patina is starting to form on the barrel which also has some gray spots. There is some mild pitting found on the left side of the frame and on the loading leaver and some minor scratches and marks scattered throughout. The stock is fine with glossy varnish, some minor abrasions and pressure marks, a chip on the left at the junction with the upper tang and a crack on the right side of the wrist. Mechanically excellent with mostly crisp markings. This is a very fine example of the scarce Colt Model 1855 British carbine!
