The top barrel flats are marked "J.D. DOUGALL 59 ST JAMES'S STREET, LONDON, MAKER TO H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES." James Dalziel Dougall opened the shop on St. James in 1863. The smooth bore barrels gauge at approximately .67 caliber and have wedges of engraved scrollwork at the breech. The pistols are fitted with blade front sights, silver inlaid sighting lines on the barrel tangs, sliding hammer safeties and plain triggers. The hammers, lock plates, trigger guards and breech plugs feature near full coverage scroll engraving. The lock plates are marked "J.D. DOUGALL" inside a banner. The trigger guards are also engraved with the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales known as the Duke of Cornwall's feathers or Prince of Wales' feathers with the motto "ICH DIEN" ("I serve"). This badge has also served as a regimental badge for many regiments of the British army which have a historical connection to the Prince of Wales and have included the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 9th/12th Royal Lancers and Staffordshire Regiment. The buttcaps have a cap compartment. The barrels are brown, the trigger guards are blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The half stocks feature fine checkering on the grips, silver thumb shields, single barrel wedges and horn forend tips. The underside of the barrels carry has wooden ramrods with a brass tips. The partitioned case is lined in green felt, brass hardware and has a James Dougall paper label on the inside of the lid. The accessories include a bullet mold, screwdriver, wrench, wad tin, cap tin, lead balls, C. & J.W. Hawksley powder flak, vise, case key and bore rod.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% of the period refurbished brown finish showing thinning. The trigger guard retains a couple areas of blue finish, otherwise a smooth gray patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth gray patina with traces of original case colors in the protected areas. The stock is excellent with a few minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with a few repairs, minor handling/storage marks and worn lining. Much of the very good label remains. This cased set is very impressive!
