Description:

These pistols would have been particularly suited to a naval officer or a dragoon. The latter's name actually comes from their use of "dragon" flintlock pistols which was an early name of these blunderbuss style pistols. The flared muzzles made reloading much easier on horseback or on the rolling seas, and the primarily brass fittings were more resistant of salt water corrosion. The markings indicate it was manufactured around 1813 when the Twigg shop was about to close. They are marked with "TWIGG" near the center of the locks, "LONDON" on top of the barrels at the breech, "cross scepter/BC/P" and "cross scepter/V" Birmingham proof and view marks on the upper left flats (indicating manufacture in 1813 or later), and "WA 171" (B) and "WA 172" (A) museum type collection markings on top ahead of the banded transition points. The barrels are fitted with folding "snap" bayonets that are secured by sliding catches on the upper tangs when folded and spring forward to latch on the studs on the muzzles when released. The locks also have light engraving, rollers on the frizzen springs, and sliding safeties. The stocks have bag shaped grips. The caliber is estimated above. The muzzles flare out to just under 1 inch.

Rating Definition:

Very good with attractive aged patina on the brass throughout and gray patina and light pitting on the iron. The cock has been professionally replaced. The bayonet stud on the muzzle is bent but will still lock the bayonet in place. The wood is very good and has numerous small dents and scratches from storage and use. Mechanically fine.
