Description:

This fine pair of high end dueling pistols were manufactured by Southall in the early 19th century. The relatively heavy barrels and saw handle stocks lend to very natural and steady aiming, and the fast locks and set triggers further enhanced accuracy potential despite the smoothbores. The large caliber combined with the accuracy enhancing features would have certainly been deadly on a field of honor. The locks are marked "SOUTHALL" at center and have floral engraving, semi-waterproof pans with gutters, half-cock safeties, and rollers on the frizzens. The smoothbore Damascus barrels have silver dovetailed blade front sights and no visible markings. The breech plugs have gold bands, platinum vent liners, and floral engraving. The upper tangs have integral notch rear sights and additional floral engraving. Each has an adjustable single set trigger and engraved trigger guard with a spur. The stocks have checkering on the grips and the following silver fittings: nose caps, wedges, wedge shields, initial ovals on top, pommel trim, and engraved butt caps. Each includes a ramrod. One of the ramrods has a cap that comes off and threads on to the other end and has a worm underneath for cleaning the barrels.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refurbished. The barrel retains 80% plus of the period refinished brown and has attractive twist patterns along its length. 90% plus of the vibrant case colors and 75% of the refurbished blue finish also remain. There are some small spots of minor oxidation and a few handling and storage type marks. The silver has attractive, dark aged patina throughout. The stock is also very fine and has a some scattered minor nicks and scratches and strong varnished finish. Mechanically excellent.

Very good as refurbished with a repaired crack in the cock neck. The barrel retain 80% plus of the brown finish and has attractive twist patterns throughout. There are some nicks at the edges and spots of minor oxidation. The lock retains 90% of the vibrant case colors and has some oxidation below the frizzen spring. 50% of the case colors elsewhere and 85% of the blue finish also remain. The silver has an attractive aged patina throughout. The stock is fine and has crisp checkering, and crack on the right between the wedge plate and forend cap, some small dents and scratches, strong original varnish, and some mild edge wear. Mechanically excellent. This is a gorgeous set of dueling pistols by a relatively rarely seen maker.
