Desirable Three-Digit Serial Number Colt Model 1900 Factory Converted Sight Safety Semi-Automatic Pistol

The Model 1900 is a very significant and historic pistol as it was Colt's first production and John M. Browning's first fully successful semi-automatic pistol design. Colt only producing 3,500 of these pistols from 1900 to 1903 and as noted this example has a very early "three digit" serial number "727" placing production in 1901. This example has was returned to the Colt factory and had the later conversion applied to the rear sight/safety. It now has a fixed rear sight. The slide is marked with the early two line/two block Colt factory patent and address markings of: "BROWNINGS PATENT'S"/PAT.'D APRIL 20.1897" followed by "COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CONN. U.S.A." The rear side of the slide has nineteen factory recut serrations followed by the encircled Rampant Colt logo. The serial number "727" is stamped on the left side of the frame above the trigger. The right side of the slide is marked "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" ahead of the ejection port. The pistol had the Colt high polished commercial blue finish with niter blue barrel and trigger, casehardened rear sight and hammer. It is fitted with the later pattern brown, hard rubber grip panels with silver escutcheons on the sides, fitted niter blue screws. It comes with an original, nickel plated magazine marked "PAT'D SEPT. 9. 1884" on the bottom of the floor plate.

ConditionVery fine as factory refurbished overall with 85% of the high polish blue finish overall, only minor edge and high spot wear on the sides, thinning on the front grip strap, and the back strap a gray patina. The grips are also in very fine condition with nice clear sharp markings and checkering overall. The smaller parts retain 90% of their nitre blue finish with more color in the protected areas. A very nice, high condition early three-digit Colt Model 1900 semi-automatic pistol.
