Description:

U.S. contract Winchester Model 12 Trench Gun manufactured circa 1944. This takedown Model 12 shotgun has the distinctive four-hole handguard and adapter for the Model 1917 Bayonet. Sling swivels are mounted on the bayonet adaptor and stock. This late production trench gun has a factory parkerized finish on the receiver, barrel, magazine, handguard and bayonet adaptor. The receiver has the rough finish with milling marks found on Model 12 shotguns with the factory parkerized finish. The slide bar, safety, trigger, screws and lower sling swivel are blued. The bolt and magazine follower are bright. The stock is fitted with the standard Winchester buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the center. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the "U.S." property mark followed by the Ordnance "Shell & Flame" insignia. A smaller "Shell & Flame" mark is stamped on the top of the barrel. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection marks which consists of the initials "G.H.D." in a rectangle above a small Ordnance Corps escutcheon. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester address in two lines followed by:"-WINCHESTER-/-TRADE MARK-" in two lines and "MODEL 12-12 GA.-2 3/4 CHAM/ CYL." The oval Winchester "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The proofmarks were stamped before the barrel and receiver were parkerized which is typical of factory parkerized Model 12 Trench Guns. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the date "43". The serial number "1035158 is stamped across the bottom of the receiver and takedown collar. Winchester Model 12 Trench Guns were used extensively by Marine Corps combat units in the Pacific Theater during WWII and continued in service through the Vietnam War. Most of the Winchester Model 12 Trench Guns were eventually arsenal overhauled and refinished. Original examples are scarce. Model 12 Trench Guns with the late production parkerized finish were manufactured in far smaller quantities than blued Model 12 Trench Guns.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This trench gun is all original and retains nearly 98% of the original factory parkerized finish. There is some very minor finish loss on the receiver high points and the slide bar shows some cycling wear. The Ordnance and Winchester markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. The stock and forearm are in excellent overall condition and retain nearly all of the original finish. The stock has a few minor handling and storage marks with crisp Ordnance inspection marks. Parkerized Winchester Model 12 Trench Guns are the most difficult World War II combat shotguns to obtain. This is an excellent, original example of a scarce parkerized Winchester Model 12 Trench Gun.
