Description:

Manufactured in 1915, this pistol was later released to the public through the Civilian Marksmanship Program which supplied quality military style firearms to the American public primarily through National Rifle Association-affiliated shooting clubs. In addition to some light adjustments being made to the flat top rear sight and some thinning of the backs of the grip panels, a short milled trigger has been installed and a clean and professional dished bevel has been added to the right side of the frame just behind the trigger, similar to the dual-sided dishing on the later 1911A1. The three-line 1897-1911 Colt patent dates and "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/U.S.A." are present on the left side of the slide, with the "flaming bomb" behind the serrations and the American Eagle and "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY." on the right. The frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on the front left, with a repeat of the bomb above the magazine catch and "N.R.A." on the right beneath the serial number. Along with the mentioned short trigger the pistol is fitted with a wide checkered hammer, checkered controls, short grip safety, flat lanyard staple mainspring housing, checkered grips with diamond flats, a folded-base two-tone magazine with a "CHT" monogram and a "K/F" marked barrel. The monogram is repeated inside the right grip panel, and the left marked "CECIL HAMELIN TAYLOR/7542"; though not verified, research shows a Cecil Hamelin Taylor (b.1878-d.unknown) as a one-year student at Harvard and a Detroit-based inventor. While most of Taylor's patents are related to automobiles, he is also the holder of a 1906 patent for an early style internal box magazine for a bolt action rifle and a 1906 patent for a novel gas operated rifle mechanism with a rotating muzzle device which is spun by exhaust gases and transfers the force to an operating rod via a set of bevel gears, and he is cited in "The Standard History of the World, Volume Eight" (published 1907) as a "competent authority" on automatic weapons.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 85% plus of the original blue finish, showing some areas of mixed brown and gray patina on the grip straps and mainspring housing, traces of old storage grease and scattered handling marks and spotting. The bevel cut is clean and smooth, with a well aged mixed brown patina in the cut area. The grips are fine, with some minor dings and rounding of the edges. The grip safety has been disabled; otherwise, the pistol is mechanically fine.
