Description:

This is a representative example of a scarce Winchester Model 1886 saddle ring carbine with possible western history. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "38-56/W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-," and the lower tang is marked with the two patent dates directly behind the trigger and the serial number on the end. It has pinned blade front and folding ladder rear sights, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, blue barrel and magazine and remaining parts casehardened and smooth forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate. With a handwritten note of provenance stating this carbine was bought by Paul Berg on June 9, 1893 from L. Sealey, Casper, Wyoming.

Rating Definition:

Good. The carbine retains mostly silvered out case colors, otherwise a mottled brown-gray patina. The wood is fair with cracks on the wrist and forearm, a large gouge on the forearm and chipping along the grain. Mechanically excellent.
