Description:

Manufactured in 1898. This rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Arms Museum letter that identifies the rifle features and states that it was shipped from Winchester on April 6, 1898. The rifle has a thin side, high wall receiver with color casehardened finish and is fitted with Schuetzen double set triggers and Schuetzen spur lever. The blued, full octagon No. 4 barrel is chambered for the .38-55 W.C.F. and has no provision for a rear sight. The rifle has a wind gauge front sight with spirit level and a tang mounted mid-range Vernier peep sight. A Winchester "Handle-Bar" palm rest is mounted on the forearm. The stock has a Schuetzen style cheek piece, late style pistol grip with hard rubber cap and checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The forearm and pistol grip have Winchester "Style H" checkering. The forearm has an ebony inlay at the tip, and the hard rubber pistol grip cap is embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a high polish piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines. The caliber designation: "38-55" is stamped on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. "PAT./OCT.7.79" is stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number, "76709" is stamped in script numerals on the rear tang screws. All of the rifle features are documented by the factory letter. The letter states this rifle has a "single set trigger" as does the included copy of the factory ledger.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus to near new. The barrel retains nearly 99% plus of the blue finish with perfect markings. The top edges of the receiver have some very light finish wear. The receiver, tang, breechblock, hammer and lever have vivid case colors. The double set triggers retain most of the niter blue finish. The wind gauge front sight and Vernier rear sight are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the original finish. The rear sight tang screw has some screwdriver wear. The palm rest in in excellent condition. The fancy grade walnut stock and forearm remain in excellent plus condition and retain nearly all of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks on the stock. The checkering remains extremely sharp. The blued shotgun buttplate has finish wear on the edges and high points but retains about 85% of the original finish. This is a magnificent example of a Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 Special Single Shot Rifle with many documented features associated with High Wall Schuetzen Rifles.
