Description:

Features a 32 1/2 inch triple fuller single edge curved blade marked "xx ANDREA xx" on the left and "xx FERARA xx" on the right. Andrea Ferrara blades were highly sought after and esteemed in Scotland during the 16th and 17th centuries. There is a general belief that Ferrara was brought to Scotland by James III to instruct the local Scottish smiths in the manufacture of the types of high quality steel blades that were current in mainland Europe. The blade is fitted with a full basket hilt with pierced through circle and heart shaped decorations, wood grip with a ray or sharkskin wrap, and an ovoid pommel. The overall length is 38 inches.

Rating Definition:

Very good as altered or repaired. The tip of the blade shows evidence of heating and reforming, likely to repair a damaged tip, several small nicks are visible along the length of the edge, and a slightly mottled gray patina is visible overall. The basket has about 50% of a blue finish on the exterior with visible mild pitting. The grip is loose with visible damage to the underlying wood and deterioration of the wrap.
