Description:

This is an exceptional example of a special order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen rifle that was manufactured in 1904. This rifle has a special order full octagon, heavy #4, 32-inch barrel that is matted on three flats. Barrels with matting on three flats are very rare. The barrel has a Winchester wind gauge globe front sight and is fitted with a Winchester A5 telescopic sight with Winchester bases and mounts. A folding mid-range Vernier peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has Schuetzen double set-triggers and second style one-piece lever. The rifle has deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with high gloss piano finish and Winchester "Style H" checkering. The second style stock has a Schuetzen cheekpiece, Helm style Schuetzen buttplate and black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The forearm is fitted with a folding "Style B" palm rest and has a horn or ebony insert at the tip. The barrel designation "4" is stamped on the bottom flat just ahead of the forearm tip. The two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." is stamped on the left center barrel flat ahead of the forearm. The caliber designation "32-40" is stamped on the left center barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. "PAT./OCT. 7. 79" is stamped on the lower tang immediately behind the second trigger, and the serial number "97046" is stamped between the tang screws. The barrel, receiver, set-triggers and buttplate have the Winchester commercial blue finish, and the hammer, breechblock and lever are color casehardened. The A5 telescopic sight has the same commercial blue finish as the other components, fine wire cross-hairs, and a rubber eyepiece. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 32/40, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Weight: #4, Trigger: Schuetzen Set, Checkered stock, Pistol grip" and "Schuetzen cheek piece, etc." The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester warehouse on July 12, 1904.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel, receiver and triggers. The receiver has some very minor high point wear, several faint scratches and a few tiny spots of flaking on the right side. The buttplate has 25% of the original blue finish remaining in protected areas, the balance has an attractive mottled gray patina. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. 70% of the original case colors are present on the breechblock, hammer and lever. The highly figured walnut stock forearm and palm rest are excellent. The checkering is sharp. The stock and forearm retain nearly 95% of the high gloss piano finish with a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. The A5 telescopic sight is contemporary to the rifle (Winchester offered A5 sights for sale in 1910) and appears to be period addition. The telescopic sight is complete, has good optics and retains more than 95% of the Winchester commercial blue finish. This is an exceptional example of a scarce and very desirable Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle with very rare special order #4 barrel matted on three flats.
