Description:

This carbine easily ranks among of the finest U.S. contract Maynard carbines extant. The two models of Maynard carbines were easily among the best firearms available during the Civil War and were used and well-regarded by both sides. Manufactured in 1864 and 1865. Some were delivered late in the war and were issued and used by 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry and the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. It has a "pinched" blade front sight, three leaf rear sight (graduated for 100, 300, and 500 yards), "GWS" stamped on the left barrel flat, "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE./MAY 27. 1851./DEC. 6. 1859." on the left side of the frame, "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." on the right side of the frame, single letter inspection marks on most of the components, the serial number on the lower tang, and a smooth, straight grain walnut stock with crisp boxed "GWS" and "JM" inspector cartouches on the left side of the wrist. A tampion is include.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as issued. 98% plus of the original blue finish remains on the barrel. There are some light scratches and minor marks. The hammer and trigger retain 95% plus original niter blue. The frame retains 97% plus of the original case colors. The colors are especially vibrant on the right side and in the protected areas. The lever is mostly plum brown. The buttplate has original finish on the sides, mostly gray and brown patina on the back, and moderate edge wear. The stock is nearly as issued other than a miniscule chip on the upper right corner of the wrist at the junction with the frame and a couple of insignificant handling and storage marks. The cartouches and other markings are essentially perfect, and the action is mechanically excellent. This is definitely a carbine well worth serious consideration by advanced Civil War firearm collectors.
