Description:

This is a very good example of a scarce U.S. contract Colt Second Model Dragoon percussion revolver that was manufactured in 1851. It has the distinctive square back trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops of the Second Model. The top barrel flat is marked "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY-" ,and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder pin and cylinder, and the partial serial number "135" is marked on the loading lever and wedge. There is a small "M" on the left side of the frame, an "H" on the cylinder and top of the back strap, "G" on the upper left front of the trigger guard, a "Q" just below the trigger guard serial number and a "T"(?) on the left side of the hammer. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Ranger and Indian battle scene and marked "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT" (parts faint). Brass blade front and hammer notch rear sights, the brass grip frame was silver plated, the hammer, frame and loading lever casehardened; and the remaining metal parts were blue. Fitted with a one-piece walnut grip with a visible "JH" cartouche on the left side and a faint cartouche on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have mottled dark gray patina, and a small amount of minor flash pitting is on the rear edge of the barrel and the forward edge of the cylinder. The brass has an attractive aged patina. The grip is also very good with some minor wear on the lower edges and overall some minor dents and dings. The fine cylinder scene is mostly visible. The barrel and frame markings are clear. The action is excellent.
