Description:

This is a fine example of a "S" code 1936 manufactured WWII Krieghoff Luger pistol. In 1936 there were approximately 4,000 Lugers manufactured by Krieghoff specifically for the Luftwaffe. The Krieghoff Luger pistols were only manufactured and sold to the Luftwaffe. This is a fairly early production Luger, and as noted, it has the two matching magazines and a very unique 1936 dated Krieghoff proofed commercial holster. The unique aspect of the holster is that it was a standard unmarked brown commercial holster that was purchased by the Krieghoff, probably for a commercial sale, and then deeply stamped the back of the holster with a large "H/Anchor/K" over the Krieghoff Suhl marking. Additionally, they stamped the lower front flap with "1936" over a small Luftwaffe "Eagle/2" acceptance proof with a single small "Winged Luftwaffe" proof on the inside of the holster similar to the standard Luftwaffe tunic badge. This small Luftwaffe proof inside the holster was shown to several Krieghoff/Luger experts who commented that they had never seen that type of proof either. The logical theory is that the holster was originally purchased by the Krieghoff factory for a commercial Krieghoff Luger, and to help satisfy their larger military contract, the holster was reproofed at the factory by the Luftwaffe inspector and included in the shipment with the military contract Lugers. The additional "Winged Luftwaffe" proof inside the holster was probably then applied by one of the Luftwaffe depot officers who was in charge for receiving/accepting the shipment of the pistols and holsters. Regardless, this is a very unique and probably one of maybe handful that ever existed. This example has the early B-2 die marked toggle that has the "H" Krieghoff Anchor "K" over "SUHL". The left point of the anchor is slightly outside the letter "H," and the right side nearly touches the anchor tip. The word "SUHL" positioned somewhat close the underside of the anchor, and it is centered directly under the anchor with the very bottom point of the anchor pointing between the letter "U and H". Additionally, it has the flat bottom on the letter "U" in Suhl. The barrel extension is marked with the early "LWaA" 1st-stage 1 early Luftwaffe acceptance proof along with the Luftwaffe test proof and small "Eagle/2" proof on the right side. The barrel underside has the bore diameter, early "Eagle/2" acceptance proof and no serial number which is correct for this early Luger. It has the typical military style serial number placement with the full serial number on the front frame and left side of the barrel extension and the last two digits on the various small parts. It has the correct early Ritzmann factory fitted brown checkered plastic grips used by the Krieghoff factory with the small fine checkered pattern with the smooth border around the edge of each grip panel. The backside of each grip has the correct mold numbers that consist of a small circled "HRS" (Herman Ritzmann & Sohne Company) and the impressed mold number "8964". The pistol has two original Krieghoff magazines; both have a nickel plated magazine body with cast aluminum base. The base is only stamped with the serial number "1457" over an inverted "Eagle/2" proof. This scarce Luger comes with a short unsigned letter that documents the previous ownership and the various collectors who have inspected this very desirable pistol.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the bright original blue finish overall showing only very minor high spot holster wear overall. 97% of the original straw colors remain. The grips are also excellent and show only minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The holster is also in excellent condition with a nice medium brown color overall with tight stitching, clear sharp markings and proofs, and only minor scuffing on the toe and top of the belt loops.
