Description:

This is a desirable example of a WWII Springfield Armory M1C sniper rifle that is fitted with an original Stith/Kollmorgan MC-1 USMC sniper scope with the first pattern Griffin & Howe mount. The M1C sniper was develop in mid-late 1944 and was used throughout WWII, Korea and into Vietnam by both the Army and Marines. After Korea, the USMC developed the larger late model Stith/Kollmorgan 4x scope and larger G&H mount and designated it as the "MC-1" sniper rifle. This is a late WWII rifle that remains in its mostly original WWII configuration with its original barrel marked: 1-"S A 1 45" and the breech in the white. The various parts are all marked as follows: unmodified operating rod marked: "D35382-9-SA", bolt marked "D28287-19-SA/O-17", trigger housing marked "D28290-8-SA", hammer "C46008-2 SA", unmarked safety, milled unmarked trigger guard, late war type III locking bar, rear sight, clip guide stamped "12". It has the late WWII pattern wide base gas cylinder, round top gas cylinder lock and a four-slot, "P/O" stamped gas plug. The receiver is fitted with an all blued G&H type scope bracket is numbered "44" on the underside, held on by three screws and two taper pins. As noted, this rifle is fitted with the larger, type 1 G&H scope mount specifically designed for use with the larger Stith/Kollmorgan 4x power MC-1 sniper scope. The scope is rolled marked on the real eye-piece with: "TELESCOPE 4XD MC-1/KOLLOMORGEN OPTICAL CORP." It has a fine cross-hair reticle. The telescope with a set of "Storm-Queen" marked rubber lens covers. The rifle is fitted with an original WWII walnut stock and handguard set, with the stock stamped on the left side with a boxed "S.A./N.F.R./Crossed Cannon" cartouche and a circled "P" firing proof in the pistol grip area. The very scarce rifle includes an original WWII leather sling. Nearly all of the M1C sniper rifles were rebuilt by Springfield Armory or other Ordnance facilities during the Korean Conflict, and most were destroyed by the Army during the 1980s. Only recently did the CMP reimported a few hundred previous foreign military sales rifles from several countries.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 97% of the arsenal green parkerized finish overall with only minor edge and high spot wear on the receiver side rail. The stock and handguards are also in very fine condition with clear cartouche and proof stamp, showing minor handling marks and light scratches and pressure dents in some areas. The scope retains 90% of its black finish with crystal clear optics. A very nice high condition M1C sniper rifle with the USMC MC-1 sniper scope and mount.
