Scarce Documented Savage Arms Company Model 1907 U.S. Army "Test Pistol" in 45 ACP

This is a fine example of a rare Savage Arms Model 1907 "test" pistol that was submitted and tested by the US Army circa 1908. This specific pistol is listed by serial number on page 261 in the book: "U.S" Military Automatic Pistols" by Scott Meadows. In January 1906 BG Crozier (Chief of Ordnance) issued a letter of invitation to industry to develop and submit a new semi-automatic handgun utilizing this newly developed 45 ACP cartridge. Eighteen companies initially responded but only eight actually submitted a test sample pistol, with Savage and Colt being two of them. Ultimately this competition resulted in the contract award to Colt for the Model 1907 pistol. The Savage Model 1907 test pistols were issued to the 3rd, 6th and 11th Cavalry units for field tests, with compensative tests being conducted by the Army between 1907 and 1911. In total only 288 Savage .45 caliber automatic pistols were actually manufactured with many of the test samples, eventually sold and shipped to the Tryon & Company with almost all examples were eventually refinished and sold on the commercial market. This example retains the original "CAL .45" markings on top of the rib with the factory legend having been removed. This example still retains the original thin/narrow grip safety that is not integral to the rear of the frame and it has the improved markings of "FIRE" and "SAFE" at the rear of the frame. It has the matching serial number "192" stamped on the magazine release lever, the underside of the upper cocking piece and the slide release. It has been fitted with a set of new reproduction checkered walnut grip panels that match the original versions correctly. The back side of each grip has also been restamped "192" to match the pistol. It is complete with one all blue magazine that is serial numbered "76" on the rear.

ConditionVery fine with 98% of the refurbished matte finish as applied by the Tryon & Company, showing only minor edge and high spot wear that has somewhat browned out overall, giving it a more authentic look. The grips are excellent with fine checkering and a nice grain pattern through each grip. A very rare and historic military "test" pistol that would compliment an advanced M1911 collection.
