Description:

Only around 1,000 of these pepperboxes were manufactured by the Bacon Arms Co. in the late 1860s. This example has "BACON ARMS CO. NORWICH CONN" on the side of the cylinder, and "444" is on the rear cylinder face, right side of the trigger, left side of the grip frame, and written on the back of the right grip. Formerly part of the Battaglia collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 90% plus of the bright, original, high polish blue finish remains on the cylinder. The few small flaked areas have smooth brown patina. The hammer retains nearly all of the original case colors. The frame retains 95% plus of the original silver plating which has an attractive aged patina. The piano finished grips are very good and have strong original finish, minor fading on the butt, a small chip on the right panel at the toe, and some light handling and storage marks. It is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings. These pepperboxes are hard to come by and few have much finish, let alone this outstanding of condition. This may well be the finest example extant and is certainly the finest example we have seen.
