Description:

Winchester Model 1876 "Centennial" Lever Action Carbine manufactured in 1878. The carbine has the 'Second Model' receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with impressed oval 'thumbprint'. This carbine has a number of special order features including the very rare combination of blued barrel, case-hardened receiver and buttplate with nickel-plated forend, barrel band, loading gate, dust cover, hammer, trigger and lever. Accompanying the carbine is a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "Carbine, Set Trigger, Sporting Leaf Sight, Casehardened, Sling and Swivel" and "Nickel Trim". The letter states this carbine was shipped from Winchester on December 5, 1878. The carbine has the distinctive full length forearm secured by one band and special forearm tip. The barrel has a steel block front sight and special order long leaf rear sight with markings on the opposite side of the leaf. The receiver has a single set-trigger. Nickel-plated sling swivels are mounted on the barrel band and stock. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The carbine style buttplate has no butt trap. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Winchester legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29 1866, OCTOBER 16. 1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The Winchester legend is partially covered by the rear sight base. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1876." in fancy letters. The assembly number, "12" is stamped in small numerals on the top of the dust cover rail. The serial number, "8637" is engraved in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. 60% of the original blue is present on the barrel although the finish is thin and the markings are light. The case colors on the receiver have silvered and the receiver has a smooth silver-gray patina with traces of case colors in protected areas. The case colors on the buttplate have a darker patina and remain about 60% intact. Nearly all of the special order nickel-plated finish is present on the forearm cap, barrel band, dust cover, loading gate, hammer, trigger and lever. The stock and forearm remain in very good overall condition with some scattered and relatively minor handling and storage marks. All Model 1876 Centennial carbines are scarce. Carbines with special order features are rare. The combination of special order rear sight, set trigger, sling swivels and nickel trim make this carbine unique and possibly one-of-a-kind.
