Signed World War II Japanese Kai-Gunto Naval Pattern Sword, Attributed to Kunimori

Measuring 36 1/2 inches in overall length with a 25 3/4 inch blade showing a fine straight hamon set into a silver finished copper habaki. The fittings are traditional for the pattern, with a thick round brass tsuba, brown tassel, cherry blossom themed decoration and a speckled black lacquer finished saya with dual suspension bands. The tang has a single mekugi-ana, with a 6-figure signature, which appears to be that of Miyaguchi Kunimori (aka Miyaguchi Shigeru, Yasuhiro), a showa-era smith who was one of the founders of the Imperial military forge at the Yasukuni Shrine and later an overseer at the Okura Forge.

ConditionFine. The otherwise fine blade shows scattered light scratches and areas of pitting, with a good temper line. The wrap shows mild stains and the saya some scuffs and lost lacquer, otherwise the fittings are good overall.
