Signed World War II Production Japanese Sword

Measuring 35 1/4 inches overall, with a 24 1/2 inch blade showing a wavy hamon fitted into a silver finished habaki. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira are of darkened iron construction, with the former decorated with raised mountain and bird scenes, a green cord wrap over horse-themed brass menuki, and a black lacquered saya with leather cover. The tang has a single mekugi-ana with the left side bearing a Seki Arsenal stamp, a seven-symbol signature and a deeply struck kokuin seal. The signature appears to be for Matsuda Takaichi (aka Kanetaka) of Seki, Noshu Province, a showa-era smith active c.1939-1945.

ConditionFine. The blade is excellent, with a few light spots and handling marks overall, with a clearly defined hamon, clean edge and an overall attractive appearance. A split is forming in the front of the habaki, with the saya showing some cracking around the throat, some wear and tear on the cover, and mild wear on the rest of the furniture. The cover is configured for use with a leather retention strap, which is not installed behind the saya.
