Description:

Measuring 37 inches overall, with a 26 inch blade showing a wavy hamon fitted into a gilt brass habaki. The furniture is of the World War II standard "shin gunto" pattern, with the addition of a silver mon badge to the side of the fuchi. The mon is a tachibana (wild citrus) flower; the flower was used as a mon by the Tachibana Clan, a clan of high-court nobility in the Nara and Heian periods, which claimed one Empress and a number of disinherited Princes among their family line, and their name would be shared with the later samurai Tachibana Clan, a castle (and the mountain it stood upon) a town, several 20th century Imperial Japanese military officers and two Japanese Navy destroyers (one the lead ship of their class). The tang is unsigned and devoid of showa/arsenal stamps.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. The edge shows some light nicks, with evidence of cleaning/ polishing, light handling marks, and a slightly faded but still legible hamon. The furniture is very good, with some fraying in the grip wrap and rayskin, dents in the saya, and mild handling marks.
