By the time Winchester debuted the Model 61 in 1932 amid the depths of the Great Depression, they had already had great success with pump action .22 rifles starting with the Model 1890, but they needed something more streamlined to replace their old fashioned external hammer .22s and compete with Marlin and Remington's "hammerless" rifles. This example has the standard markings and features, comes with a correct factory box, and has a Model 61 hang tag. The full serial number on the label is not legible, but "890" is legible indicating it is almost certainly the original box.
