Factory Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Extraordinary Relief Carved Grip and Holster

This attractive factory engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver was manufactured 1863. This fourth variation Model 1851 Navy revolver has a large oval trigger guard, beveled, v-shape loading cut-out in the barrel lug and capping groove in the right recoil shield. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The left side of the one-piece grip is relief-carved with the image of a serpent attacking a nested eagle with chicks. The relief carving is surrounded by a raised border. A block "E" is stamped above the serial number on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap which indicates that the component was designated by Colt for engraving or special finish. The barrel, loading lever, frame, trigger guard and back strap are engraved with detailed Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The sides of the hammer are decorated with a hound's head motif and scrollwork. The engraving was probably executed by master engraver Gustave Young who, along with Herman Bodenstein, was the primary Colt engraver in 1864. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA - " in a panel formed with scalloped engraving with a flourish at the muzzle end. "COLT'S/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame in a scrollwork panel. The serial numbers on the barrel lug and frame are enclosed by scrollwork, and the serial number on the back strap is surrounded by an engraved ribbon. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and ''COLTS PATENT NO." and "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843". "36 CAL" is stamped on the left front web of the trigger guard. The full serial number, "139639", is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9639" is stamped on the loading lever, cylinder arbor pin and wedge. All of the visible serial numbers match. The brass back strap and trigger guard are silver-plated, and the barrel, loading lever, frame and hammer are gold-plated. The revolver is accompanied by a skirting leather, open top, "California" style holster. The back of the holster has a sewn belt loop reinforced by a single rivet. The holster has hand-stamped scallop, feather, oval and double-line decorations and is stamped with what appears to be: "J.C. KELSEY/MAKER" in two lines.

ConditionFine. The revolver is all original and has traces of gold washed finish in protected areas. The trigger guard and back strap retain about 40% of the silver-plated finish. The barrel and frame have an attractive silver-gray patina. The cylinder has half of the Texas Navy battle scene visible. The cylinder safety pins are not battered, and the rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples show minimal flash pitting. There is minimal flash pitting on the hammer. The flawlessly executed scroll and punch-dot engraving is crisp. The slightly undersized grip is in exceptionally fine condition with sharp relief carving. The revolver action is tight and functions perfectly. The holster is contemporary to the revolver and is in fair condition. The leather surfaces are smooth with limited surface cracking. The edge of the holster top and throat is torn, and the stitching on the seam has deteriorated. This is a good looking example of a factory engraved, gold-plated, Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with relief-carved grip and period California style holster.
