Manufactured in 1909 with special order two-tone finish (blue/nickel), Lyman peep sight and pistol grip stock. It has standard Winchester markings including the factory oval proof on the barrel and receiver at the breech and is fitted with beaded blade front, elevation adjustable rear and folding Lyman tang peep sights. The bolt, frame, trigger guard and buttplate are nickel and the barrel and magazine tube are blue. The screw heads are correctly blue. Mounted on a nicely figured 12-groove round forearm and smooth pistol grip stock with hard rubber Winchester grip cap and crescent buttplate. Matching assembly number "16033" is marked on the lower tang under the stock, buttstock and buttplate. The buttplate has been factory renumbered likely due to a factory error. According to Winchester slide action rifle expert and author Ned Schwing, only 1,340 Model 1890s received the factory half nickel finish and only 620 Model 1890s were manufactured with the plain pistol grip stock (see "Winchester Slide Action Rifles, Vol I," pages 221 and 226). The half nickel and pistol grip stock makes for a unique combination.

Very fine. The rifle retains 95% of the original blue finish with most of the loss due to slide wear and 98% plus original nickel finish which has mostly taken on a frosted appearance on the trigger guard. The wood shows an old coat of applied varnish and is very fine showing a few minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Truly an attractive example of a special order Model 1890 rifle with two-tone finish and pistol grip stock.
