Description:

Only 1,202 of these rare carbines were manufactured in 1807-1810. They are also commonly referred to as "Indian Carbines" and were the first carbines manufactured by the U.S. armories and the only firearms manufactured by a U.S. armory to fill an order from the Indian Department for use as gifts for friendly Native Americans. Gift giving was an integral part of alliance maintenance with Native American groups. These carbines are the American counterparts of the "chief grade" fusils presented to Native American groups allied with the British in the same time period. It has a small blade front sight, "P/eagle head/V" proofs at the breech on the left, "US/eagle/SPRINGFIELD" and "1809" on the lock, plain brass thumb plate, sling swivels, and "1808" on the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration, dark artificial brown patina overall, mild pitting concentrated at the breech, minor oxidation, and aged patina on the brass. The revarnished stock is good with cracks and a break in the forend, and some scattered dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
