Cased Colt Third Model 1848 Dragoon Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1859. The revolver has the combination of rounded brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops that collectors identify as characteristics of the "Third Model" 1848 Dragoon revolver. It has a blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer; and silver plated brass grip straps. The grip has a varnished piano finish. The barrel has a nickel silver front sight blade. The recoil shields on the three-screw frame and bottom of the trigger guard lack stock cut-outs found on some Dragoon revolvers in this serial number range. The top barrel flat is marked "{ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY }." The left side of the frame has "COLTS/PATENT." The cylinder has the ranger and Indian fight scene and "MODEL USMR/COLTS PATENT". Small "H" or "K" sub-inspection marks are on most components. The full serial number, "18400," is on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap. The partial serial number "8400" is on the loading lever and cylinder arbor pin. The mahogany American style case has crimson velvet lining and four compartments. The case contains a rare U.S. inspected Dragoon style powder flask with adjustable charger and bullet compartment. The top of the bullet compartment lid is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The top of the flask is stamped with a small script "WAT" Ordnance final inspection mark and "P" sub-inspection mark. The case also contains a L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, 100-count percussion cap tin embossed "ELEY BROS/LONDON," sealed pack of six 44-100 for Remington and Colt's pistols and blued steel U.S. contract .44 caliber double cavity bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT," "44H" and what appears to be "A.H.K."

ConditionFine. This revolver retains 30% plus original blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has a smooth dove gray patina with significant amounts of the commercial blue finish on the bottom and right side of the lug. The cylinder has aged to an even silver gray and retains 60% of the scene. All of the safety pins remain, and the percussion nipples show only moderate flash pitting. The grip straps have traces original silver plated finish in protected areas; the balance is a good looking, un-touched patina. The grip is good with moderate handling wear and retaining 30% varnished piano finish. The action functions well. The case exterior is very good and has been re-varnished but shows minimal handling wear. The relined interior is very good; wear is limited to some minor compression marks. The accessories are in good to very good condition with the exception of the bullet mold which is fair with some scattered surface rust. This is a solid representative example of a cased Colt Third Model 1848 Dragoon revolver with scarce U.S. inspected powder flask.
