Historic Presentation Inscribed D. Moore No. 1 Derringer

The Moore derringers were manufactured in the first half of the 1860s and were the first large caliber cartridge derringers. This same basic design was also manufactured by the National Arms Company and then Colt. This example has the scroll and arrow engraving, a horse head on top at the breech, the address on the top of the barrel, no patent marking or serial number on the bottom, and "W.B. Hill, Esq./from his Friend/Jno M. Stevenson" inscribed on the left side. "Esquire" in the U.S. was typically an courtesy title given to lawyers. The exact men referenced in the inscription is not documented, but the most likely associations found are businessman John McPherson Stevenson (1818-1904), a Baltimore resident at the outbreak of the war formerly from Gettysburg active in the mercantile business from 1820-1870 and listed as one of the two vice-presidents the convention that nominated Henry Winter Davis as the Unionist candidate for Maryland's Third Congressional District for the 1862 election, and attorney-at-law William B. Hill (1813-1890), also of Baltimore, who established his practice in 1851 and served as Maryland's Secretary of State from 1862 to 1866. The breech face of the barrel and back side of the right side plate in the hammer well are numbered "1." It has a post front sight. It comes in a custom Royal Oak case from 1992 marked "BROOKS & CO'S" markings on the exterior, a inscribed plaque on the inside of the lid, and fitted interior for the pistol, a two cartridge block, and bore rod.

ConditionVery good with most of the period replated silver finish, dark gray-brown patina and mild pitting on the balance, and some minor marks and scratches. The engraving and inscription are legible. Mechanically fine. The custom modified cigar case and accessories are very good and have minor storage wear.
