Description:

During the Vietnam War there were only three companies that produced M16A1 rifles; Hydramatic Division of General Motors, Colt Firearms and Harrington & Richardson Arms Company of Worchester, Mass. At the end of the war, H&R ceased production of these rifles, and the only H&R M16A1 rifles that were sold to the general public happened after the company sold its private factory collection in the mid 1980s. So any H&R marked M16A1 is a fairly scarce and desirable rifle. This rifle receiver is correctly stamped on the left side with the H&R factory logo that depicts a "Standing Male Lion" flanked by "H&R"/PROPERTY/OF U.S. GOV'T/M16A1/CAL. 5.56MM/ 2074531". The rear area is correctly marked "HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON/WORCHESTER MASS./U.S.A". The receiver is correctly marked: SAFE/SEMI/AUTO", and it has the correct full automatic trigger group inside; however, it is fitted with a Colt commercial "semi-automatic" bolt carrier, so it will not function in the "Full Auto" mode. The right side of the receiver is stamped with a white ink "DOD" inspection stamp. This example has a Colt M16A2 upper receiver that has been fitted with the short lived very heavy "light machine" gun barrel and the large square black plastic handguard set. The barrel dimension under the handguards are slightly over an inch in diameter with 0.93 at the muzzle area. This style was proposed by Colt in the early/mid 1980 when the Army was developing the SAW concept; however, it was never adopted. The front of the barrel is fitted with a large steel bracket designed for a folding bipod (which is not included) and the standard front base/post front sight. The front end of the barrel is marked: "D MP 5.56MM 09548". The barrel is fitted with a standard M16A2 type upper receiver with the fully adjustable 800 meter rear sight, shell deflector and no forward assist. It is fitted with an early M16 black plastic buttstock without the butt trap and a standard black plastic, checkered pistol grip. This comes with one BETA Company "C-Mag" drum magazine, a green magazine pouch, two loading tools and a very desirable "Canadian Machine" heavy hydraulic buffer.

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled, with 95% plus reanodized black finish on the lower receiver with a lighter gray finish on the Colt upper receiver with both showing edge and high spot wear with evidence of light firing. The plastic components are all in very fine condition showing only light/minor handling marks or wear. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
